How the discount calculator works

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by the discount percentage and subtract it, or multiply the price by (1 − percentage as a decimal). 20% off $80: 80 × 0.20 = $16 off, so you pay $64.

How much is 20% off?

Take the price × 0.20 to find the saving, or price × 0.80 for what you pay. $50 at 20% off costs $40.

How do double discounts work?

They're applied in sequence, not added. 20% off then extra 10% off a $100 item: $100 → $80 → $72 — a total of 28% off, not 30%.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − the discount as a decimal). A $75 item at '25% off' was originally $75 ÷ 0.75 = $100.
