VAT Calculator Netherlands (21%)

Published by H. Jhon · October 2026

Dutch btw made simple: gross up a net price by 21%, or work backwards from a VAT-inclusive amount to the original netto figure.

How the Dutch VAT (btw) calculator works

Bar chart: adding 21% VAT (btw) to a €100 net price gives €100 net, €21 VAT, €121 gross
A €100 net price plus 21% VAT (btw) = €121 gross. The calculator above works this out for any amount.

Dutch VAT rates (btw)

The Netherlands keeps things to two rates: 21% for nearly everything, and a 9% band for the goods and services the government wants to keep affordable.

VAT registration in the Netherlands

Since 1 January 2024 there is no turnover threshold for Dutch VAT: a business registers with the Belastingdienst before sending its first invoice, however small. The consolation is the KOR (kleineondernemersregeling): a business making no more than €20,000 a year can opt out of charging btw on its invoices entirely.

Most filers submit a quarterly btw-aangifte; high-turnover businesses file monthly, and the smallest can arrange an annual filing with quarterly advance payments.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard VAT rate in the Netherlands?

The Dutch standard VAT rate (btw) is 21%. A reduced 9% rate applies to food, medicines, books and cultural events.

How do I remove 21% VAT from a gross price?

Divide the gross amount by 1.21. For example €121 ÷ 1.21 = €100 net, so €21 of btw was included.

What is VAT called in the Netherlands?

VAT is called btw (belasting over de toegevoegde waarde) and appears on every Dutch invoice.

Is this Netherlands VAT calculator free?

Yes, free with no signup. It comes set to the 21% standard btw, and the custom option covers the 9% reduced band.

What is the KOR in the Netherlands?

The kleineondernemeresregeling for businesses with turnover of €20,000 or less. They charge no VAT to customers, but cannot reclaim it on their own purchases either.

Do I need to register for Dutch VAT from my first sale?

Yes. The €1,883 annual threshold was abolished on 1 January 2024, so every business registers before it starts trading, regardless of size.

What is at the 9% btw rate?

Groceries, medicines, books, hotel accommodation and passenger transport. Everything else standard is 21%.

How often is Dutch VAT filed?

Quarterly for most businesses, monthly above a high turnover threshold. Micro-businesses on the KOR can file annually.
