How the UK salary calculator works

Frequently asked questions

What are the UK tax bands for 2025/26?

The personal allowance is £12,570 (tax-free, tapering above £100,000). The basic rate is 20% on taxable income up to £37,700, higher rate 40% up to £125,140, and additional rate 45% above that.

How much National Insurance do I pay?

Employees pay 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% on everything above £50,270. The calculator applies these rates to your gross salary.

Is pension contribution included?

Workplace pension contributions (usually 5% employee) are not deducted by default because schemes vary — subtract your pension contribution from the result if you pay into one.

Does this include the tax-free personal allowance?

Yes. The first £12,570 is tax-free, and the allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 earned above £100,000, which the calculator handles automatically.

Estimates are for guidance only and are based on published 2025/2026 rates. Always confirm with a qualified professional for financial decisions.
