Frequently asked questions

What are the Irish tax bands for 2025/26?

The standard rate of 20% applies to the first €44,000 of income (€53,000 for married couples with a dependent spouse); the balance is taxed at 40%. Everyone also gets €2,000 personal + €2,000 PAYE tax credits.

What is USC and do I pay it?

The Universal Social Charge is a separate tax on almost all income. It starts at just 0.5% on the first €12,012 and rises through 2% and 3% bands to 8% above €70,044 — full medical card holders pay reduced rates.

What is PRSI?

Pay Related Social Insurance funds Irish social welfare benefits. Employees pay Class A PRSI at 4.1% on gross income. Self-employed people instead pay Class S at 4% plus USC on self-employed income.

Is pension contribution included?

No — contributions to a company pension reduce your taxable income, so your real take-home will be higher than shown if you pay into a pension. Subtract the pension amount from gross for a closer estimate.
