How the percentage calculator works

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100 — or simply multiply by the decimal form: 15% of 200 is 200 × 0.15 = 30.

How do I calculate percentage increase?

Percentage change = (new − old) ÷ old × 100. If a price rises from 80 to 100, that's (100−80)/80 × 100 = +25%.

How do I calculate a discount?

Use section 1: a 20% discount on a $50 product is 20% of 50 = $10 off, so you pay $40.

What is the difference between percent and percentage?

'Percent' means a rate per hundred (with a number: 15 percent), while 'percentage' refers to a portion of a whole in general usage — in practice the terms are used interchangeably.
